'Abd Allāh b.Husayn
1882‐1951
The first king of Jordan. Second son of Sharif and Hussein of Mecca. Joined the Arab Unity movement in Cairo just before World War I, and participated in the Arab Revolt at his father's command when the war began. Later, with the help of Britain, he became the emir of Trans-Jordan (1921), and in 1946, independence was achieved and he became king. He proposed the Greater Syria plan, which made neighboring countries wary of him. In the First Arab-Israeli War, the Arab Legion occupied and annexed the West Bank, changing the country's name to Jordan (1948), and he was assassinated in Jerusalem in 1951.
