The capital of the Mures County in Romania, located in the upper reaches of the Mures River in the eastern part of the Transylvanian Basin surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. Population 166,000 (1994). Pre-Christian stone, bronze and iron tools have been excavated from the surrounding area, as well as pottery used by the Dacians and Romans, but it does not appear in written records until after 1332. At the time, Romanians and Hungarians (Székelys) coexisted in the area, and the city flourished as a trading city. It later developed into a city with a large Székelys population.
