Eastern Alliance - Tongmaeng (English spelling)

Japanese: 東盟 - とうめい（英語表記）Tongmaeng

Also written as Dongmyeong. A ritual to worship the heavens held in October every year in Korea and Goguryeo. The "Records of the Three Kingdoms" Wei Zhi Goguryeo Chapter states, "There is a large cave called Tunnel to the east of the royal capital, and in October a national assembly is held to welcome the Tunnel God and worship him at the waterside to the east of the royal capital, and a wooden tunnel is offered to the altar." The Tunnel God is the mother of Jumong (→ King Dongmyeong), and was an object of ethnic worship. The meaning of the wooden tunnel is unknown. This ceremony is similar to the Buyeo people's Yinggu, the Wi people's Mucheon, and the Han people's agricultural festival, and was inherited by the Goryeo dynasty and was assimilated with the events of the Eight Guans.

東明とも書く。朝鮮，高句麗で毎年 10月に行われた祭天儀式。『三国志』魏志高句麗伝には「王都の東方に隧穴と名づける大穴があって，10月に国中大会を開き隧穴神を迎えて王都の東の水辺に祭り，木隧を神座に奉る」とある。隧穴神とは朱蒙 (→東明王 ) の母のことで，民族的な信仰の対象であった。木隧の意味は不明。この儀式は扶余族の迎鼓，濊族の舞天，韓族の農耕祭と類似しており，高麗朝にまで継承され，八関会の行事と習合して行われた。
