It is a major holy site for Hinduism and Buddhism in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, and the capital of the district of the same name. It has a population of 929,000 (1991). It is located about 820 km to the capital Delhi in the northwest, and about 700 km to Calcutta in the southeast, at the midpoint of the main railway line and National Highway No. 2 that connect the two major cities. The city spreads out in a semicircle on the left bank of the holy Ganges River, which flows from south to north around here. During the 6th and 5th centuries BC, it was the capital of the Kashi state, one of the 16 great kingdoms, and the largest political, economic and cultural center in the middle Ganga basin.
