Length measurement within the field of view of a microscope has limitations in terms of measurement range and accuracy. Therefore, if a device is prepared that can fix the microscope, position one end of the measurement part of the item within the field of view, and then move the item so that the other end can be similarly positioned, and then measure the amount of movement, it is possible to expand the measurement range and improve accuracy. This is a measuring microscope, and the figure shows an example of a tool microscope. The table can move in two perpendicular directions, forward and backward and left and right, and the coordinate values are read using a combination of a gauge block and a micrometer, or a combination of a standard ruler and a measuring microscope.

顕微鏡の視野の中での長さ測定は，測定範囲および精度において制限がある。そこで，顕微鏡を固定して，品物の測定部の一端を視野内で位置決めし，品物を移動して他端を同様に位置決めできるように，別に移動させ，かつその移動量を測定できる装置を用意すれば，測定範囲が広くかつ精度の向上が望める。測定顕微鏡がそれで，図はその一例として示した工具顕微鏡である。テーブルは前後，左右の直角2方向に移動でき，座標値はブロックゲージとマイクロメーターの組合せか，標準尺と測微顕微鏡の組合せで読み取る。
