Mesenchyme

A relatively coarse connective tissue consisting of stellate cells and intercellular substances that exists between various epithelial tissues in animal embryos. Also called mesenchyme. In sea urchin embryos, mesenchymal cells spill into the blastocoel during gastrulation and later participate in the formation of bone fragments. In vertebrates, they arise from cells derived from the mesoderm of somites and lateral plates or the neural crest, and differentiate into cartilage and connective tissue in the strict sense as organs form. Blood vessels are also formed in the mesenchyme. The mesenchyme not only serves as a connective tissue to connect and nourish epithelial tissues, but also plays an important role in determining the developmental fate of epithelia, and this relationship is called the epithelial-mesenchymal correlation, and is one of the main research topics in experimental embryology.

動物胚(はい)の各種上皮組織間に存在する、星状の細胞と細胞間物質からなる、比較的粗な一種の結合組織。間葉ともいう。ウニの胚では原腸形成時に間充織細胞が胞胚腔(こう)中にこぼれ落ちて、のちに骨片形成に関与する。脊椎(せきつい)動物では体節、側板などの中胚葉あるいは神経冠に由来する細胞から生じて、器官形成とともに、軟骨や狭義の結合組織へと分化し、血管もまた間充織中に形成される。間充織は単に結合組織として上皮組織の連結と栄養補給に役だつのみでなく、上皮の発生運命の決定に重要な役割を果たし、そのような関係は上皮―間充織相関とよばれ、実験発生学の主要な研究題目の一つとなっている。
