These are hard, unglazed bowls and plates commonly known as Gyoki-yaki or Toshiro-yaki in the Aichi Prefecture region, and in some areas are also called rice husk ware because of the rice husk marks on the edge of the foot. The name Yamachawan is thought to have come from the fact that many defective bowls and plates that were discarded are scattered at old kiln sites in the mountains. If it refers to the Yama-bushi and Ko-bushi that appear in the Engishiki, it corresponds to a set of white porcelain (ash-glazed pottery) bowls and small bowls, but usually it refers to white porcelain pottery that transformed from white porcelain bowls into unglazed miscellaneous utensils for the general public in the late 11th century.
