WASP

WASP is an abbreviation for White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. Anglo-Saxons are the name given to the people who make up the backbone of the British people. Strictly speaking, the concept refers to people who migrated to England from the Saxon region in northwestern Germany, but today it is a general term for people of diverse origins who live in England, Scotland, Wales, and other islands. Furthermore, when it comes to WASP, it is often the case that Anglo-Saxons are not limited to immigrants of British descent, but also include immigrants of Western and Northern European descent.

It is well known that there are two types of Protestantism: Lutheran and Calvinist, but many people who immigrated to America also belonged to the Church of England. While Calvinist churches are regionally independent and do not have a national organization, the Church of England is more similar in organization to the Catholic Church. Therefore, the term "Protestant" has a broad meaning that includes those who are not Catholic.

At the end of the 18th century, just after independence, the WASPs had an overwhelming numerical advantage, but with the increase in new Catholic and Jewish immigrants from the second half of the 19th century onwards, their numerical advantage collapsed. However, even in the 20th century, many of the leaders in the political and business world were of WASP origin, and they were considered to constitute the ruling class of American society. For example, the first president who was not of WASP origin was Catholic John F. Kennedy. The term WASP itself was originally a term used by white British people to boast about their cultural superiority over new immigrants and non-whites. However, in recent years, it has also been used as a derogatory term to mean average and uncreative Americans who accept traditional American values. This is one of the signs that the superiority of WASPs, both numerically and socially, is faltering.

WASP(ワスプ)とは、White Anglo-Saxon Protestant（アングロ・サクソン系プロテスタントの白人）の略である。アングロ・サクソン人とはイギリス民族の根幹をなす人々の呼称で、厳密にいえば、ドイツ北西部のサクソン地方からイングランドに移住した人々をさす概念であるが、現在では、イングランド、スコットランド、ウェールズなどの諸島に住む多様な出自の人々の総称になっている。さらに、WASPという場合には、イギリス系の移民に限らず、西欧系や北欧系の移民も含めて、アングロ・サクソンとみなしていることが多い。

　プロテスタントには、ルター派とカルバン派があることはよく知られているが、アメリカへ移住した人々には、イギリス国教会（イングランド教会）に属する人も少なくなかった。カルバン派の教会は地域的に独立しており、全国的な組織をもたないのに対して、イギリス国教会は組織面ではむしろカトリック教会に類似している。したがって、プロテスタントといっても、実際にはカトリック教徒でないという程度の広い意味をもつものであったといってよい。

　独立直後の18世紀末において、WASPは数の上でも圧倒的な優位を誇っていたが、19世紀後半以降のカトリック系やユダヤ系の新移民の増加とともに、数の上でのWASPの優位は崩れた。しかし20世紀に至ってなお、政財界の指導者にはWASP出身者が多く、アメリカ社会の支配層を構成するとみなされてきた。たとえば大統領を例にとれば、WASP出身者でない大統領はカトリック教徒のジョン・F・ケネディが最初であった。WASPという呼称自体は本来イギリス系白人が新移民や非白人に対して、その文化的優位を誇示することばであった。しかし最近では、伝統的なアメリカの価値観を受け入れる平均的かつ非創造的なアメリカ人という意味をもつ蔑称(べっしょう)として用いられることもある。このことは、数の上でも社会的にもWASPの優位性が揺らいでいることの現れの一つであろう。
