…Other greenhouses, with walls on the north side and a glass canopy sloping to the south, and with potted plants on stepped platforms inside, were also built for the primary purpose of forcing plants into the ground. A little later, large botanical gardens also built fully glazed cast-iron greenhouses for planting plants directly in the ground (a representative example is the palm greenhouse (1848) at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London, designed by Decimus Burton and Richard Turner). The shapes of glass roofs were varied but not arbitrary; for example, domes were used to prevent harmful condensation from dripping, and corrugated surfaces were used to capture the low light of the morning and evening sun. …
