King of Greece. Also called Otto. Reigned 1832-62. German name Otto. Born as the second son of Bavarian King Louis I, he was elected as the first modern Greek king by the great powers (England, France, and Russia) at the London Congress in 1832. Even after he came of age and abolished the regency, he continued to rule in an absolutist manner, making heavy use of Bavarian politicians and military men, until the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in 1843. He later advocated a Greek territorial expansionism, known as the Megali Idéa, in an attempt to win the favor of the people, but this failed, and he was dethroned in 1862.

ギリシア国王。オトンともいう。在位1832‐62年。ドイツ名オットーOtto。バイエルン王ルートウィヒ1世の次男として生まれ，1832年のロンドン会議で列強(英，仏，露)により近代ギリシア初代の国王に選出された。成人して摂政制を廃したのちも，43年立憲君主制となるまでバイエルン人政治家･軍人を重く用いて絶対主義的な統治を行う。のち〈メガリ･イデアMegáli Idéa〉といわれるギリシア領土拡張主義を標榜して国民の歓心を集めようとしたが実らず，62年廃位させられた。
