1815‐67 King of Greece. Also called Otto. Reigned 1832-62. German name Otto. Born as the second son of Bavarian King Louis I, he was elected as the first modern Greek king by the great powers (England, France, and Russia) at the London Congress in 1832. Even after he came of age and abolished the regency, he continued to rule in an absolutist manner, making heavy use of Bavarian politicians and military men, until the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in 1843. He later advocated a Greek territorial expansionism, known as the Megali Idéa, in an attempt to win the favor of the people, but this failed, and he was dethroned in 1862.
