Red Barnacle (English name) Megabalanus roseus

Japanese: アカフジツボ（英語表記）Megabalanus roseus

A marine animal of the order Sessile, family Barnacleidae, class Gnathopoda. Its shell diameter is about 3cm and its height is about 2cm. Its shell surface is smooth and uniformly crimson red. It often attaches to the bottom of a ship or a buoy. Its reproductive season is from March to May. It is endemic to Japan, found from Mutsu Bay in Aomori Prefecture to the Yaeyama Islands in western Okinawa Prefecture, and its fossils have been excavated from the Neogene deposits of the Cenozoic era. The closely related giant red barnacle M. volcano can reach a shell height of over 5cm. It is found from Sagami Bay in Kanagawa Prefecture south to the Yaeyama Islands, where it grows in colonies near the low tide line of rocky reefs facing the open ocean. 顎脚綱無柄目フジツボ科の海産動物。殻径 3cm，殻高 2cmほどになる。殻の表面はなめらかで，一様に紅赤色である。船底や浮標などに付着することが多い。生殖期は 3～5月。青森県陸奥湾から沖縄県西部の八重山諸島まで分布する日本固有種で，新生代新第三紀層より化石も出土している。近縁のオオアカフジツボ M. volcano は殻高 5cmをこえることもある。神奈川県相模湾以南八重山諸島まで分布し，外洋に面した岩礁の低潮線付近に群生する。生殖期は 7～10月。（→顎脚類，甲殻類，節足動物，フジツボ類）
