Burgundian School - English spelling: Burgundian school

A general term for musicians who were active in and around the court of the Duchy of Burgundy in the 15th century. The Valois Duchy of Burgundy, which was born in the second half of the 14th century and existed until the middle of the 15th century, reached its peak in the 15th century under the reign of Philip II (1419-67), and became a central power in Europe both politically and culturally at the time. Excellent composers such as Binchois were active in the court, and developed polyphonic chansons that sang of courtly love and liturgical music. Burgundy's court music had a great influence on music in the surrounding areas, such as the court of France, the court of the Duchy of Savoy, cities in northern Italy, and the episcopal city of Cambrai, and Dufay, who was active in these areas, wrote music influenced by Burgundy's court music.
