Born: 12 May 1843, Colchester [Died] December 27, 1922. Chipstead, Surrey. British Buddhist scholar. He stayed in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) as a judge, but from 1883 he taught Pāli as a professor at the University of London, and also taught comparative religion at Manchester University (1904-15). His greatest achievement was founding the Pāli Scripture Society, which transcribed many Pāli scriptures into the Roman alphabet and published them. His works include Buddhist birth stories (1880) and the Pāli-English dictionary (1921-25, co-authored with W. Stead). His wife Caroline was also famous as an authority on Buddhist studies.
