(1) History of the search for carcinogens In 1775, British surgeon Percival Pott (1714-88) reported that chimney sweeps were prone to scrotal cancer, and suggested that this was due to their long-term exposure to soot. This was the first clear statement regarding the presence of carcinogenic factors in the environment and the existence of occupational cancer.

...Cancer that occurs as a result of carcinogenic factors in the work environment during occupational work is called occupational cancer. The first occupational cancer discovered and described in the world was scrotum cancer caused by soot in chimney sweeps (by British Percival Pott (1775)). In Japan, the first case of lung cancer in gas furnace workers was reported by Kuroda Shizuka and Kawabata Koretatsu (1936).

...It contains detailed descriptions of diseases caused by the work environment of over 50 occupations, including miners, gilders, chemists, potters, blacksmiths, pharmacists, dyers, oil makers, stones, weavers, farmers, and fishermen. In 1775, British surgeon Percival Pott (1714-1788) discovered that scrotal cancer, an occupational disease of chimney sweeps, was caused by soot. The poor boys who worked as chimney sweeps in modern England were, so to speak, the first occupational cancer patients.
