Born in 1554. A Rinzai sect disciple of the Daikaku school's Kintei Kiku and inherited his teachings. In 1587, he became the headmaster of the Ashikaga School in Shimotsuke (Tochigi Prefecture) and devoted himself to reviving the school. He later became the chief priest of Nanzenji Temple in Kyoto, and was invited by the founder of Fushimi Enkoji Temple, which was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, to publish woodblock print books known as the Fushimi edition, including "Kōshi Kago." He passed away on May 20, 1604. He was 65 years old. He was from Ogi County, Hizen (Saga Prefecture). His pen name was San'yō.
