1852‐1934 Italian criminal law scholar. Born in Naples to an aristocratic family. He had a career as a lawyer, judge, and other legal practitioner, but also served as a professor of criminal law and criminal procedure at the University of Naples. His main work is Criminology (first published in 1885, second edition in 1891; translated into French, Spanish, Portuguese, American, and other languages), in which he defined crimes that lack altruistic feelings or moral sensitivity as "delitto naturale," and systematized criminal sanctions around this concept.
