Italian painter. His real name was Cenni di Pepo. He was active in Rome, Pisa, Florence, and other cities, and died after 1302. Although there are few confirmed works, he is said to have been the author of the murals in the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi, Madonna and Child with Four Angels and St. Francis (late 1270s), Christ on the Cross in the Basilica of San Domenico in Arezzo (1268-1271), and the Maiesta (Madonna of the Solemnity) (commonly known as the Madonna of Santa Trinita, c. 1290, Uffizi Gallery). His paintings have a free and human atmosphere amidst a Byzantine stiffness, and foreshadow the blossoming of the Italian Renaissance prior to Giotto.
