A small island in the Seine in the center of Paris, France. It is the birthplace of Paris, and was settled by the Celtic Parisii tribe as early as the Roman period. Until around the 9th century, the area of Paris consisted entirely of this island. It is home to the city hall, police station, courthouse (Palais de Justice), Hôtel Dieu (now the city hospital), and Notre Dame Cathedral. → Related article Seine [river] | Banks of the Seine in Paris Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
