In normal textiles, the warp threads are generally perpendicular to the weft threads, but in this type of textile, the warp threads are intertwined with other warp threads, creating transparent gaps on the surface of the textile. In other words, by using a special device called a furuesokou, the karamidate threads are woven while turning to the left and right of the other threads, the jidate threads. This type of textile includes ramie, gauze, silk, and komeori. It is highly valued as a thin, lace-like fabric, and is used in various patterned textiles and dyeing. 搦み織(からみおり)ともいう。通常の織物では経(たて)糸が緯(ぬき)糸に直交することを原則とするのに対し,経糸が他の経糸と互いにからみあい,織物表面に透けた空隙を生じた織物。すなわち振綜絖(ふるえそうこう)という特殊装置を用いることによって,〈搦み経(からみだて)〉が他の糸〈地経(じだて)〉の左右に転じつつ織製されるもので,羅,紗,絽(ろ),縠(こめ)織などがこの種の織物に属する。薄いレース状の外観から〈うすもの〉と呼ばれて珍重され,各種の紋織物や染に応用されている。
