…It is said to differ from the oral method in that it does not place strict restrictions on the use of the mother tongue or translation, but it has many similarities, such as providing as many opportunities as possible to use the target language, emphasizing pronunciation, repeating basic sentence structures, and practicing replacing words in sentences. While the oral method incorporates context and circumstances, the oral approach is more systematic, but it has also been criticized for being too mechanical. In 1956, the English Language Teaching Council (ELEC) was established with the aim of improving English education based on the oral approach, and has invited leading scholars from the United States and the United Kingdom to contribute to research on education methods and retraining teachers. Around 1960, the influence of Chomsky's generative grammar began to reach Japan, and in the late 1960s this idea began to be adopted in English education. …
