A dam is a dike-like structure built to prevent the collapse or spillage of waste rock and slag from being accumulated in a mine. It is usually called a tailings dam or simply a dam. The law requires that waste rock, slag, and sediment discharged from ore-dressing plants, crushing plants, smelting plants, etc. be deposited in a tailings dam with retaining walls, dikes, drainage facilities, etc. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
