The Great Sutra of Immeasurable Life

Japanese: 大無量寿経 - だいむりょうじゅきょう

One of the Mahayana Buddhist scriptures. The central sutra of the Three Pure Land Sutras. Two volumes. Its correct name is the Sutra of Immeasurable Life. It is also known as the Great Sutra or the Double-Volume Sutra. It teaches that Bodhisattva Dharmakara makes a vow under the Buddha Amitabha, fulfills it, becomes Buddha Amitabha, and builds the Pure Land. It is considered the fundamental scripture of Pure Land Buddhism because it teaches the original vow of rebirth through chanting the name of Amida. There are the original Sanskrit text, a Tibetan translation, and five Chinese translations. There are many commentaries, including Vasubandhu's commentary (The Treatise on Pure Land), as well as those by Huiyuan and Jizo.

大乗仏典の一つ。浄土三部経の中心経典。２巻。無量寿経が正称。大経，双巻経とも。法蔵菩薩が世自在王仏のもとで願(がん)を立て，それを成就して阿弥陀仏となり，極楽浄土を建設することを説く。この中で念仏往生の本願が説かれるので，浄土教の根本聖典とされる。サンスクリット原典，チベット語訳，５種の漢訳本がある。世親(せしん)の注（浄土論）をはじめ，慧遠(えおん)・吉蔵(きちぞう)等多くの注釈書がある。
