An evergreen tall tree of the Bombacaceae family (APG classification: Malvaceae). It is said to be native to the Malay Peninsula and the East Indies, and can reach a height of 30 meters. The leaves are leathery, oblong, about 15 cm long and 5 cm wide, with a rounded base and a pointed tip. The upper surface of the leaf is dark brown, and the underside is covered with gray-brown scales. Short inflorescences grow directly from the trunk or large branches, and several white or pale yellow five-petaled flowers bloom. The ovary is covered with scales. The fruit is spherical or ovoid, 15-20 cm in diameter, 15-25 cm long, brown, and densely covered with hard, spiric projections on the surface. The skin is thick, and the inside of the fruit consists of five lobes, each filled with several pale yellow fleshy lumps. Each lump is narrow oblong and contains two or three gray-brown seeds. The flesh is edible. The texture is similar to fresh cream, with a slight starchy taste, a strong sweetness and an elegant fragrance. However, some people dislike the foul-smelling odor that emanates from the inner wall of the fruit, which is similar to the smell of rotten onions. However, due to its good taste it is called the king of tropical fruits and is used not only raw but also in ice cream and jam. Young fruits are also eaten pickled. The seeds have a texture similar to that of potatoes and can be eaten boiled or roasted, and the starch extracted is used medicinally.
