Airfield - aerodrome

Airfield - aerodrome

A limited area on land or water used for aircraft take-off and landing. It has runways and other necessary areas for take-off and landing, ascent after take-off, and approach, as well as facilities for these, and also has factory buildings and other facilities for aircraft maintenance, inspection, and repair. Legally, there are four types of airports: land airports, water airports, and land and water heliports. They are classified as civilian airports and military airports depending on their use, and as departure airports, regular (purpose) airports, alternate airports, reserve airports, and auxiliary (or refueling) airports depending on the handling of flight plans when operating aircraft. Civilian airports are classified as public and non-public, but in Japan, public airports used for air transportation are called "airports" and are classified into first, second, third, and third types depending on the route and the airport manager. They are further classified into classes A to I based on the length, width, and strength of the runway, and an airport with only a runway is called an airstrip.
