Japanese: ケイ素鋼(珪素鋼) - けいそこう（英語表記）silicon iron

A soft magnetic material containing around 3% silicon in iron. It is mainly used as a magnetic core for transformers and motors. Silicon steel is manufactured by cold rolling hot coils and annealing them, so it requires a certain degree of ductility. The upper limit of silicon content is kept at around 3% because, although the theoretically optimal amount is greater than this, workability deteriorates significantly as the amount of silicon increases. The role of silicon is to reduce the specific electrical conductivity without impairing the high magnetic permeability of pure iron, thereby achieving the low iron loss required for electrical steel sheet.

鉄にケイ素が3％内外含まれた軟質磁性材料。主としてトランスやモーターの磁心として使用される。ケイ素鋼はホットコイルを冷間圧延し，焼きなまして製造されるので，ある程度の延性を必要とする。ケイ素含有量の上限を3％内外におさえているのは，理論的な最適量はこれよりも大きいが，ケイ素量が増加すると加工性が著しく劣化するためである。ケイ素の役割は，純鉄の高い透磁率を損なわないで，比電気伝導度を低下させて，電磁鋼板として必要な低い鉄損を実現することにある。
