In Italian, this word generally refers to a novel, especially a short story. Here, we will discuss the narrow sense of novella, i.e., a medieval Italian "short story." The word originally meant "something new" or "news." The medieval Mediterranean was a commercial region with a long tradition dating back to Greece and Rome, and active trade activities took place connecting both the Christian and Islamic worlds. Moreover, this commercial activity was not limited to the Mediterranean, but was part of a long commercial trade route that stretched from England and France in the west to Persia, India, and the Far East in the east.

イタリア語で一般に小説，とくに短編小説を示す言葉。ここでは狭義のノベラ，すなわち中世イタリアの〈小話〉について述べる。この語は本来〈新奇なこと〉〈ニュース〉を意味していた。中世の地中海はギリシア･ローマ以来の伝統をもつ商業地帯であり，キリスト教世界，イスラム世界の双方を結んで活発な交易活動が行われていた。しかも，この商業活動は地中海の中だけに限定されるものではなく，西はイギリス，フランスなど，東はペルシア，インド，極東まで連なる長大な商業交易路の一環をなしていた。
