A writer from the Russian Soviet Union. Born in Oryol province in central Russia. He studied agriculture at the University of Leipzig in Germany and initially worked as an agricultural engineer, but his travelogue In the Land of Fearless Birds (1907), which vividly portrayed the nature and folklore of Karelia and Lapland, won him acclaim and he began writing. He was an unrivaled observer of nature and is known as the "singer of Russian nature." His lifelong themes were "to seek and discover in nature the wonderful aspects of the human heart" and "to see the human heart in the various forms of nature."

ロシア･ソ連邦の作家。中央ロシアのオリョール県出身。ドイツのライプチヒ大学で農学を学び，はじめ農業技師であったが，カレリアやラップランドの民俗や自然を活写した紀行文《恐れを知らぬ鳥の国で》(1907)で高い評価をうけ，文筆活動に入った。無類の自然観察者で，〈ロシアの自然の歌い手〉として知られる。彼の生涯のテーマは，〈自然の中に，人間の心のすばらしい面を求め，発見すること〉〈自然のさまざまな姿に人間の心を見ること〉であった。
