The third political party in the 19th century in America. It was formed by debtors, mainly farmers, who opposed the government's policy of monetary contraction after the Civil War and demanded an increase in the issuance of greenbacks (fiat paper currency). It held its first national convention in 1876. It later gained the support of workers and reorganized as the Greenback Labor Party. In 1878, it ran on a platform of increasing the issuance of paper currency, opposing convertibility, shortening work hours, and restricting Chinese immigration, and sent 14 members to Congress. It rapidly declined in the 1880s, and disappeared after fielding a candidate in the 1884 presidential election. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
