Kansai Main Line - Kansai Honsen

Japanese:
Kansai Main Line - Kansai Honsen

The name of the JR line. The 59.9 km section between Nagoya and Kameyama is under the jurisdiction of Central Japan Railway Company, with a double-tracking rate of 32.7%, and the 115.0 km section between Kameyama and JR Namba is under the jurisdiction of West Japan Railway Company, with a double-tracking rate of 38.0%. The sections between Nagoya and Kameyama and between Kamo and JR Namba are DC-electrified. The section between Nagoya and Kizu was opened by the Kansai Railway Company in 1890-1899 (Meiji 23-32), the section between Kizu and Nara by the Nara Railway Company in 1896, and the section between Nara and Minatomachi by the Osaka Railway Company in 1889-1892, but the Kansai Railway Company merged with the Osaka and Nara Railway Companies and was nationalized in 1907 (Meiji 40). Cities along the line include Yokkaichi, Nara, and Yamatokoriyama.

During the Kansai Railway era, it competed fiercely with the government-run Tokaido Main Line between Nagoya and Osaka, but after nationalization, modernization did not progress and the line performed poorly as its rival Osaka Electric Tramway and its successor, Kintetsu Railway, became the main passenger transport line along the line and took away passengers. After World War II, electrification was finally undertaken as a suburban commuter line between Osaka and Nagoya, and the Minatomachi-Nara section was completed in 1973 (Showa 48), and the Hatta-Kameyama section in 1982. In 1987, following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, the line became part of Central Japan Railway Company and West Japan Railway Company. The section between Kamo and JR Namba is nicknamed the Yamatoji Line.
