1553‐1608 Spanish court painter. Born in Madrid and died in the same city. A student of the first Spanish court painter, Sánchez Coello, he painted portraits in the Flemish style with detailed depictions. He served Philip II and Philip III in their later years, and in addition to producing numerous portraits of the royal family, he also painted religious paintings such as The Nativity and The Adoration of the Shepherds.
