Spanish court painter. Born in Madrid and died in the same city. A student of the first Spanish court painter, Sánchez Coello, he painted portraits in the Flemish style with detailed depictions. He served Philip II and Philip III in their later years, and in addition to producing numerous portraits of the royal family, he also painted religious paintings such as The Nativity and The Adoration of the Shepherds. スペインの宮廷画家。マドリードに生まれ同市で没した。最初のスペイン人宮廷画家サンチェス・コエリョの弟子で,フランドル風の細密描写による肖像画を描いた。晩年のフェリペ2世と同3世に仕え,数多くの王家肖像画を残したほか,《キリストの降誕》《羊飼いたちの礼拝》などの宗教画も描いた。【神吉 敬三】
