Kansai Art Academy

Japanese: 関西美術院 - かんさいびじゅついん

A Western painting educational institution in Kyoto. In 1902, Asai Chu was appointed professor at the Kyoto Higher Technical School, and in the following year, with the cooperation of Tamura Soryu, Ito Yoshihiko, and Miyatori Hideki, he opened the Shogoin Western Painting Research Institute and began nurturing the next generation of artists. Eventually, with assistance from the Sumitomo family, a new school was built in Okazaki-cho, and in 1906, it was relaunched as the Kansai Art Academy. Asai was recommended as the director, and Ito, Miyatori, and Kanokogi Takeo were appointed professors. It was the largest educational facility in the Kansai region, and attracted many talented young people such as Umehara Ryuzaburo and Yasui Sotaro, making a great contribution to the promotion of Western painting in the Kansai region, which had been lagging behind.

京都の洋画教育機関。1902年に京都高等工芸学校教授に任ぜられた浅井忠は，翌03年，田村宗立，伊藤快彦，都鳥英喜らの協力を得て聖護院洋画研究所を開いて後進の育成に乗り出した。やがて住友家の補助などにより岡崎町に教場を新築し，06年，改めて関西美術院として発足した。浅井が院長に推され，伊藤，都鳥，鹿子木孟郎を教授とした。関西で最大の規模をもつ教育施設であり，梅原竜三郎，安井曾太郎ら有為の青年を多く集め，立ち遅れていた関西の洋画の振興に大きく貢献した。
