A deciduous shrub of the Salicaceae family (APG classification: Salicaceae). Adult leaves are elliptical or obovate with wavy sawtooth edges and slight wrinkles. The underside is powdery white and almost hairless. The surface of the wood has ridges. From spring to summer, flower spikes appear before the leaves appear. The bracts are densely covered with yellowish brown (fox-colored) hairs, hence the name. Dioecious. Both male and female flowers have one glandular body on the ventral side. Two stamens. One pistil, ovary with a stalk and hairless, style and stigma are short. Grows in the mountains and fields of Honshu north of the Chubu region, Hokkaido, and the southern Kuril Islands. Those found west of the Kinki region have thick, short male inflorescences and underdeveloped or weak leaflets at the base, and are distinguished as a separate subspecies, S. vulpina subsp. alopochroa (Kimura) H.Ohashi et Yonek. ( S. alopochroa Kimura).

ヤナギ科（APG分類：ヤナギ科）の落葉低木。成葉は楕円(だえん)形ないし倒卵形、縁(へり)に波状の鋸歯(きょし)があり、すこししわがある。裏面は粉白色を帯びほぼ無毛。材の表面に隆起線がある。春から夏にかけて、葉が出る前に花穂を出す。包葉は黄褐色（きつね色）の毛が密生。名はこれによる。雌雄異株。雌雄花ともに腹側に1個の腺体(せんたい)がある。雄しべ2本。雌しべは1本、子房は柄があり無毛、花柱、柱頭ともに短い。中部地方以北の本州、北海道、南千島の山野に生える。近畿地方以西のものは雄花穂が太く短く、基部の小葉片が未発達か貧弱で、別亜種サイコクキツネヤナギS. vulpina subsp. alopochroa (Kimura) H.Ohashi et Yonek.（S. alopochroa Kimura）として区別する。
