Byzantine Emperor (reigned 527-565). Nephew of Justin I. Co-ruled with his wife Theodora. Appointing Belisarius and Narses, he conquered the Vandal Kingdom and the Ostrogothic Kingdom, seized part of the Visigothic Kingdom, and temporarily recreated an empire that turned the Mediterranean Sea into a lake. He had the Corpus Juris Civilis compiled, built Hagia Sophia (Aya Sophia), and implemented a policy of caesar-papism.
