Brain coral - Brain coral

Japanese: ノウサンゴ(脳珊瑚) - ノウサンゴ(英語表記)brain‐coral
Brain coral - Brain coral
A species of coelenterate (cnidaria) in the family Platygyridae of the subclass Hexacorallia of the class Anthozoa, or a general term for species in the genus Platygyra. The brain coral Platygyra lamellina (illustration) is widely distributed from Suruga Bay to the South Pacific and is an important species of reef-building coral. It forms disc-shaped or clumpy colonies, and the largest ones can reach over 1m in diameter. The capsule pore surrounded by the capsule wall is long and undulating, forming a brain shape, with 12 to 18 septa per centimeter. During the day, the polyps do not extend and remain hidden within the green capsule pore, but at night they become active, extending their translucent tentacles by several centimeters.
