…The 1951 amendment to the Portuguese Constitution transformed the country from a colony to an overseas state. In September 1956, the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) was founded in Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau) on the African mainland under the leadership of A. Cabral. In July 1963, a PAIGC executive meeting was held on the struggle for Cape Verde, and the national liberation movement was fought by the PAIGC.
