Apomixis. A form of parthenogenesis in plants in the broad sense, in which gametophyte cells other than egg cells (such as synergid cells) develop independently to produce a plant body without receiving a sperm nucleus. There are two types of apomixis: reproductive apomixis, which starts from a haploid cell, and vegetative apomixis, which starts from a diploid cell. There are many natural examples in ferns, but it can also be seen in Chinese chives and other seed plants.
