…After the Nazis came to power in 1933, he fled to Moscow and joined the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences, where he studied literary history and aesthetics. He engaged in the so-called “Expressionist Controversy” with Seghers, Bloch, and Brecht regarding the positioning of civil realism and avant-garde art. After the war, he returned to Hungary and became a professor at the University of Budapest. He established himself as a representative thinker in the Eastern bloc through his controversy with existentialism, “The Young Hegel” (1948), which pointed out the influence of economics on the formation of Hegelian philosophy, and “The Collapse of Reason” (1954), which criticized the irrationalism of modern Western philosophy that prepared the Nazis. However, despite his repeated self-criticism, he was criticized by the party after the Hungarian incident and other events, and in his later years he devoted himself to writing on aesthetics and ontology. …
