An annual plant of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). Also known as tawaramui. The culms are soft, upright, and 30-40 cm tall. From June to September, it produces sparsely branched panicles with spikelets hanging from the ends of thin branches. The spikelets are ovate and slightly flattened, 1-2 cm long and about 1 cm wide, and produce about 10 florets. The glumes are 6-8 mm long and overlap each other like tiles. They turn yellowish-white when mature and are used as dried flowers. Native to Europe, it is cultivated for ornamental purposes and has also become wild. The name comes from the fact that the spikelets are large and oval, and turn yellow when ripe, resembling golden ovals or wheat bales. The closely related B. minor L. is smaller than B. minor, with erect inflorescences and triangular-ovoid spikelets that are about 4 mm long and wide and produce 3-6 florets. Native to Europe, it has become naturalized in Japan. B. media L., a perennial native to central and southern Europe, has purple inflorescences and produces erect panicles. Treated as an autumn annual, it is sown in September or October, but can also be directly sown in spring. It is hardy and requires little protection from the cold. [Ken-chang Heo and Somin Ryu August 20, 2019] From June to September, it produces branched panicles with drooping spikelets at the ends of thin branches. The spikelets are ovate and slightly flattened.
