My Tho

Japanese: ミト（英語表記）My Tho

The capital of Tien Giang Province in southern Vietnam. A river port city that is the center of economic activity in the Mekong Delta, it is located about 60 km south-southwest of Ho Chi Minh City and overlooks the northernmost of the major branches of the Mekong River. The surrounding area was a marshland, but after drainage during the French colonial period, agricultural development began and the city developed as a distribution center for rice, coconuts, sugarcane, and fruits. Rice milling, coconut oil, soap, and other products are manufactured in the city. It is also important as a transshipment point from the South China Sea coastal shipping route to the inland waterways of the Mekong Delta. In 1940, at the end of the colonial period, large-scale riots broke out during the Nam Ky (South Vietnam) Uprising. Connected to Ho Chi Minh City by road. Population: about 100,000.

ベトナム南部，ティエンジャン省の省都。メコン川デルタの経済活動の中心となっている河港都市で，ホーチミン市の南南西約 60kmにあり，メコン川主要分流のうちの最も北の分流にのぞむ。周辺一帯は湿地帯であったが，フランス植民地時代に排水が行われてから農業開発が始り，市は米，ココナッツ，サトウキビ，果実などの集散地として発展。市内では精米，ココナッツ油，石鹸などの製造が行われる。南シナ海沿岸航路からメコン川デルタの内陸水路への積替え地としても重要。植民地時代末期の 1940年，ナムキ (ベトナム南部のこと) 蜂起の際，大規模な暴動が起った。ホーチミン市と道路で連絡。人口約 10万。
