New Ireland [island] - New Ireland
An island in Papua New Guinea. It is the second largest island in the archipelago, occupying the northeastern part of the Bismarck Islands. It is a volcanic island. It is elongated from northwest to southeast, and no volcanic activity has been observed. The inhabitants are Melanesian. Kavieng, at the northwestern tip, is the capital. The main industry is coconut plantation cultivation. 9,600 km2 . Population: 194,067 (2011).
