Emblema (English spelling) emblema

Emblema (English spelling) emblema
The word comes from the Greek word emberein (to embed). Used in the arts, it refers to a part of a large mosaic surface that is embedded in a different subject or technique from the surrounding area. Especially after the Hellenistic period, when several different techniques came to be used for mosaics and the floors of mansions began to be decorated with mosaics, a mosaic decoration method was developed in which the center of the mosaic was decorated more carefully than the surrounding area and the emphasis of decoration was placed on the center. Generally, the surrounding area of an emblema is decorated with geometric patterns, and emblemas are often pictorial representations with themes such as mythology, allegory, and still life.
