Yoron Island

Japanese: 与論島 - よろんじま
Yoron Island
Located at the southernmost tip of the Amami Islands (since March 2010, the Amami Islands), Okinoerabu Island lies to the northeast and Okinawa Island to the southwest. It was also written as Yoron. It forms Yoron Town in Kagoshima Prefecture and has an area of 20.56 km2 . The entire island is made up of raised coral reefs and is flat. Karst topography is developed inland. The ancient name Kaefuta can be seen in Omoro-sōshi. There is a legend that it became part of the Ryukyu Kingdom after it paid tribute to King Yeongjo in 1266. It is said that in 1405, the third son of King Korenishiba of Hokuzan, Ryukyu, came to the island as the Lord of the World and built Yoron Castle. In 1512, King Sho Shin's second son Sho Choei came from Shuri and established a political system in which religion and politics were united, with Noro as the leader. In 1609, the Shimazu clan invaded Ryukyu, and the area was transferred from the rule of the Ryukyu Kingdom to the direct control of the Kagoshima Domain. In the late early modern period, it was divided into two Magiri. In 1879, it was attached to Oshima County. The main crop is sugarcane, and pumpkins are also cultivated. Tourism-related industries developed against the backdrop of the white coral coast and the cobalt blue sea. Yoron Airport and Yoron Port were also developed.
