Drought damage

Japanese: 干害 - かんがい（英語表記）drought damage

A general term for damage caused by droughts due to water shortages. Generally, it refers to damage to agricultural crops and forests, but drought damage in a broad sense also includes damage to daily life and industry due to lack of water supply and industrial water, reduced power generation capacity, etc. In temperate zones, droughts are more likely to occur in the summer when evapotranspiration is high. In Japan, even if there is considerable drought in the summer, droughts rarely occur due to the amount of precipitation during the rainy season in June and July, but for that reason, droughts are easily controlled by the amount of precipitation during the rainy season. Many droughts, such as the severe drought in western Japan in 1939, are caused by a lack of rain during the rainy season, known as a dry rainy season.

水不足による干魃によってもたらされる被害の総称。一般には農作物や森林の被害をいうが，上水道や工業用水の不足，発電能力の低下などによる生活上，産業上の被害も広義の干害に含められる。温帯においては蒸発散量の大きい夏に発生しやすい。日本では夏にかなりの日照りが続いても 6～7月の梅雨による降水量のため発生することは少ないが，それだけに梅雨期間中の降水量に支配されやすい。1939年の西日本の大干害をはじめその多くが梅雨期に雨の降らない，いわゆる空梅雨によることが多い。
