In 751, he was promoted to Junior Fifth Rank. In 757, he was promoted to Junior Fifth Rank and Sagami no Kami. In 757, he was promoted to Mikawa no Kami. In 758, he was promoted to Kazusa no Kami and deputy envoy to Tang China. In 759, he was promoted to Minister of Education. In 760, he was promoted to Dazai no Shoni, Shogoi no Jyo, and Hitachi no Kami. Around this time, he was found out to have been plotting to remove Fujiwara no Nakamaro together with Fujiwara no Yoshitsugu, Otomo no Yakamochi, and Saeki no Imamunehito, and Yoshitsugu was blamed, while the others were acquitted and later reinstated to their posts. In 765, he was promoted to Junior Fourth Rank and Middle Captain of the Konoe. In 769, he was promoted to Councilor and Shogoi no Jyo. In 768, he was promoted to Junior Third Rank. He was the Minister of Ceremonies around this time. In 770, Emperor Shōtoku died, and together with Fujiwara no Nagate and others, he worked hard to support the succession of Emperor Kōnin. For his achievements, he was appointed Dazai no Sochi. In 771, he became Shikibukyō and Chunagon. In 772, he was given the surname Mononobe no Ason. In 773, he became Chutaka no Suke. In 774, he entertained Chinese envoys as an imperial envoy. In the same year, he was given the surname Isonokami no Oason. Around this time, he was an advisor to the Crown Prince. In 781, he became Dainagon. In 781, he became Shosanmi (Senior Third Rank). In the same year, he died and was posthumously awarded Shonimi (Senior Second Rank). His posthumous name was Bongyō. He enjoyed extensive reading of classics and historical texts, excelled in poetry and prose, and was skilled in calligraphy. Along with Tankai Mifune, he was renowned as a leading man of letters. Some of his poems and poems are included in the Keikokushū. In his later years, he devoted himself to Buddhism and rebuilt his house into a temple called Ashukuji. Based on the idea that the inner and outer gates are originally one, he established a library for apocrypha within the temple, where he collected his Confucian books, named it Untei, and opened it to scholars.
