…After his father's death, the family returned to Antwerp in 1589. Rubens studied at the Latin School and became a page to a nobleman, but he decided to become a painter and studied under two masters (one of whom was Adam van Noort (1562-1641), who later became Jordaens's master), before studying under Otto Cornelisz. van Veen (1556-1629), one of Antwerp's leading Romanists, and in 1698 joined the local painters' guild. Only a few of his early works are known from his apprenticeship until he went to Italy in 1600, and his cold, academic style is difficult to distinguish from the Italian-oriented style of his masters and other 16th-century Flemish painters. …
