...There are also many fishermen who work partly as farmers and part as fishermen, using the fishing ports of Seongpo and Jangseongpo as their bases to fish in the coastal waters for hairtails and cod, and to farm oysters and shrimp. The island is connected to the Goseong Peninsula across a narrow strait by the 740m-long Geoje Bridge (completed in 1971). Gohyeon-ri in the center of the island used to be the center, but in 1980 the Okpo Shipbuilding Industrial Complex, with a one-million-ton dock, was completed in Jangseongpo-eup, and the population has been concentrated there ever since.
