Film director. Born in Tokyo on September 15, 1926. In 1951, he graduated from the Department of Western History at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Waseda University, and joined Shochiku's Ofuna Studio. After working as an assistant director under Ozu Yasujiro and Nomura Yoshitaro, he moved to Nikkatsu in 1954, accompanying his mentor Kawashima Yuzo. In 1958, he made his directorial debut with "Stolen Desires from the Tent Theater," a comedy depicting the dynamic human drama of a traveling troupe and villagers. In the same year, his third film, "Endless Desires" (1958), drew high praise for its vivid portrayal of people fighting over hidden military supplies after Japan's defeat in World War II. With "Nan-chan" (1959), which depicts the children of a coal mine, and "Pigs and Battleships" (1961), which depicts the conflict between thugs and gangsters around the Yokosuka US military base, he established the genre of "heavy comedy" as an action film depicting sordid, earthy desires. In 1963, "Japanese Insect Chronicles," which depicts the strange life of a woman from a rural area in Tohoku, became a masterpiece that won many awards. After "Red Murder" (1964), he founded Imamura Productions in 1965, and after "An Introduction to Anthropology from the Eroticists" (1966), based on a novel by Nosaka Akiyuki, he co-produced with ATG to shoot the innovative documentary "A Man Vanished" (1967), which showed new horizons. "The Ballad of Narayama" (1983) won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He later won the same award a second time for "The Eel" (1997). Other films include "Profound Desire of the Gods" (1968), "Vengeance is Mine" (1979), and "Black Rain" (1989). Meanwhile, in order to train directors, actors and staff, he opened the Yokohama Broadcasting and Film College in 1975 and became its principal. In 1985, he expanded it into a three-year vocational school, changing its name to the Japan Institute of the Moving Image, and in 1986, he became its chairman and principal. The filmmakers include directors Miike Takashi (1960-), Hosono Tatsuoki (1952-), Kim Su-gil (1961-), Sasabe Kiyoshi (1958-2020), Motohiro Katsuyuki (1965-), and Lee Sang-il (1974-), screenwriter Jeong Eui-shin (1957-), Akutagawa Prize-winning author Abe Kazushige, entertainers Ucchan Nanchan (Uchimura Teruyoshi, 1964-, Nanbara Kiyotaka, 1965-), and actor Hasegawa Hatsunori (1955-). The school has steadily produced the next generation of leaders, including Ryu Daisuke (1957-2021) (opened as Japan Institute of the Moving Image in 2011). He passed away on May 30, 2006, due to metastatic liver tumors. He was 79 years old.
