…He first aimed to become a doctor, but then turned to literature. His first play, “The Student Tavern,” was performed in 1854, but it was a complete failure, and he stopped writing for several years. After marrying the actress Brécourt in 1858, he once again became interested in writing plays, and with the success of “The First Weapon of Figaro” (1859) and “The Golden Nails” (1860), he established his reputation as a budding playwright. After that, he wrote about 40 comedies, most of which were plays of manners that focused on the plot, such as “The Benoiton Family” (1865), “Let’s Get a Divorce” (1880), and “Spiritualism” (1897). …
