Luxor (English spelling)

Japanese: ルクソル（英語表記）Luxor

A town on the east bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt. Population: about 93,000. In Arabic, it is called al-Aqṣur. It is famous for the Great Temple of Amun, which is connected to the Karnak Temple by an avenue of sphinxes bearing the inscription of Nectanebos I. The Luxor Temple seen today was built by Amenhotep III on the site of a temple from the 12th Dynasty and expanded by Ramses II, with minor alterations made by Tutankhamun, Horemhab, Alexander the Great, and others. The god Amun here is the god of fertility and fertility, and is represented as Min with a huge erect phallus.

上エジプト，ナイル川東岸の町。人口約9万3000。アラビア語ではアクスルal‐Aqṣur。カルナック神殿とネクタネボス1世の銘のある人頭のスフィンクス参道で結ばれたアメン大神殿で有名。今日見られるルクソル神殿は，第12王朝時代の神殿の跡にアメンヘテプ3世が建設し，ラメセス2世が増築したもので，その後ツタンカーメン，ホルエムハブ，アレクサンドロス大王などにより小規模な変更がなされた。ここでのアメン神は肥沃多産の神で，巨大な男根を直立させたミンの姿で表される。
