A town on the east bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt. Population: about 93,000. In Arabic, it is called al-Aqṣur. It is famous for the Great Temple of Amun, which is connected to the Karnak Temple by an avenue of sphinxes bearing the inscription of Nectanebos I. The Luxor Temple seen today was built by Amenhotep III on the site of a temple from the 12th Dynasty and expanded by Ramses II, with minor alterations made by Tutankhamun, Horemhab, Alexander the Great, and others.
