It is located in northwestern Russia. It has an area of about 9,890 km2 . It is the second largest lake in Europe. Its deepest point is 120 m. It freezes from November to May. Fishing is a major industry. It is connected to the Baltic Sea via the Svir River and Lake Ladoga, to the Volga River via a canal along the southern shore, and to the White Sea via the White Sea-Baltic Canal. The southwestern White Sea is Onega Bay, into which the Onega River (416 km long) originating from Lake Racha flows.
